Mission Statement

The mission of the SoFlo Writing Project is to provide professional development opportunities and support for writing teachers in South Florida. The SoFlo Writing Project supplies resources, access, and community for writing-centered discussion, pedagogical exploration, and justice-oriented research that can be engaged both inside and outside of the classroom.

Goals

  • To provide high-quality professional development that builds teachers’ knowledge and skills in writing instruction, including writing process, genre study, and assessment.
  • To create a supportive community of educators who share a passion for writing and are committed to improving the teaching and learning of writing in South Florida.
  • To offer opportunities for teachers to engage in writing themselves, both as a means of personal growth and as a way to model writing practices for their students.
  • To collaborate with local schools, districts, and other educational organizations to promote effective writing instruction and to advocate for the importance of writing in all subject areas.
  • To contribute to the larger National Writing Project network by sharing our knowledge and experiences with other sites and by learning from their successes and challenges.

Values

  • We value the diversity of our community and believe that all voices and perspectives are essential to a vibrant and inclusive writing culture.
  • We believe that writing is a powerful tool for learning, self-expression, and social change, and that all students and teachers deserve opportunities to develop their writing abilities.
  • We are committed to providing ongoing, sustained support for teachers, recognizing that meaningful change in writing instruction requires a long-term investment in professional practice.
  • We believe that collaboration and community-building are essential to our success as a site and to the growth and development of individual teachers and writers.
  • We are dedicated to continuous learning and improvement, both as individuals and as an organization, and we are open to new ideas and approaches that can enhance our work.
